The JR 2022 Best Heat Pump Award
Every year we install and repair hundreds of heat pumps and see the ins and outs of them all and have come up without list of the ones worth your money. We have seen most of the major brands this year out in the wild so the its a pretty comprehensive list.
We rank all of our best heat pump hot water systems on the following with big weight going to reliability and if the customer has replaced the unit with an alternate brand when the system is under warranty it goes straight in our dog box. Who wants to fork out thousands only to do it again afew years later. We also base our rankings on efficiency, reheat time, performance, build quality, features, packaging (a big one for plumbers), transportation, warranty, product review, aftersales service and price. Don't forget we have access to them all so it's not a biased option as either way we can get the sale, we would just prefer not to hear from you for the next 10 years, no offense.
How high do we rank product reviews opinion? Not at all when it comes to products and it's for a very simple reason. Most people don't offer a product review without an incentive unless the unit has failed. For a glowing review you can be pretty sure you will be compensated by the company with extended warranties, gift cards, discounts on future products, free servicing etc. When it comes to the bigger brands alot of them are to blind to see the importance of reviews and put no effort into accruing them so even though they may cost the same, perform twice as well and last 3 times longer they rate half as well.
To make an easier informed decision on the perfect heat pump hot water system for your family ask your plumber but make sure he has at least 5 options and is not directly tied to a specific company as their only installer in your region.

Winner - Rheem Ambiheat 270 (551270)
What we do like about the all new Rheem Ambiheat HDC 270 - Its a typical Rheem, well built, plenty of features including timer modes so you can align the unit with your solar, vacation function, magnetic metal screen cover, its relatively quiet at 47db, modern colours and not overly tall so it can fit pretty much anywhere. Price wise they are mid/high range but you do get a great unit. We have installed afew this year and had 0 complaints, have never seen one broken down and they keep up well with a big family.
What we dont like - Nothing to picky but the way the unit orientates off square for installation looks an untidy and unfinished heatpump hot water system. The control board is also set up for the way the Americans do dates so can get abit confusing.
Runner Up - Enviroheat 200 & 250L
Whatdo we like about the Enviroheat 200 and 250l by Envirogroup- They are great value at well under $3000 installed. Very well priced with plenty of features including timer mode and vacation modes for solar alignment, boost function, option to install internally and they are very quiet at 46db. They are one of the more popular units we are seeing this year and for good reason. They are made by Haier who also make Fisher and Paykel and delivered all over the world and as far as we can tell work just as well here as in the snow of Europe.
What we dont like - The front screen is hard to see in bright light but you only have to set it once and also accessing the screen by removing two screws isn't as convenient as the Rheem's magnetic cover. The external shell which is mainly cosmetic is pretty thin and easy to damage, it is though cosmetic.
Third Place - Stiebel Eltron WWK222/302H Boosted
Everything we like about the Stiebel Eltron WWK222/302H Boosted heat pump hot water systems- These units have been around for a long time now in various models and every time you pull one out its the same story, 12-15years old and never been serviced. The have now added an inbuild screen to monitor performance and serviceability. These units also use electrolysis for rust protection with a battery back up so maintenance is virtually free. While they don't have a timer function they do have the ability to be controlled by alot of modern solar invertors to run during the day. Its the unit I installed in my house and even with 8 living here recently it kept up with everyone. At only 45db you wont even know its on day or night. They are at the higher end of the price scale but you can see the German quality as soon as its unboxed.
What we don't like - No timer function to align operation with older solar systems and very limited user functionality. It is German though so I'm sure they know best
FourthPlace -Rheem MPi 325L SplitSystem (551325)
What we love about the Rheem MPI 325L heat pump - These things are solid and just keep going seemingly with no regard for the number of occupants in the household, a massive improvement from the original model. Being a split system they are ever so slightly more involved for installation but with the reduced height fit in a lot of low spots. Being less restrained by compact packaging repairs on these units are very easy.
What we don't like - The condensate line is extremely low sometimes leaving no way so acceptable termination. They are now on their second variation and while its 10x better than the old unit it is still hampered by the old perceptions or unreliability and apart from the odd blown flow and return hose it seems to have bucked the trend.
FifthPlace -Stiebel Eltron WWK222/302
What we love about theStiebel Eltron WWK222/302 - These units are near identical apart from 2 key features. Upboosted so no backup when its need but this does improve efficiency and for now no external control board, but this isn't to far away. Outside that its the same as the boosted variant and a great unit, they should be right up the top of your wish list.

The JR Naughty List - How do you get on the JR naughty list.
There are plenty of ways but the main one is reliability. If your only job is to make hot water and you are offline that often, you are failing at your job, its time to go.
We are not going to single out each brand and let you know what's wrong with the units but we can say we would more likely invest in a kettle.
But what about reviews, dont they rank nearly 5 stars? Yes they do but when you offer extended warranties or $50 giftcards you can see why they have so many great reviews.
So people don't redo their reviews when the product fails? Generally no, we are all busy, we forget and alot of the time the company does get your unit up and running........ eventually.
A quick story. One of the heat pumps on this list was so unreliable we replaceda naughty list heater for the company owner's best mate with a Stiebel Eltron as it was offline for he estimated 25% of its 3 year life waiting for repair. The relationship was more important to him so the heater went along with his hard earnt cash.
Warranty is another huge reason and it's related to reliability.A unit may have a 10year warranty but if they are not here in 3 years or change the company name the warranty generally isn't valid.
Sometime even worse is they are still around, and they are happy to keep sending you spares for your plumber to install. You then soon realize you have paid for the unit twice over just in labor on a second hand unit.
Our verdict is just stick to the top ten, but as close to the top as you can afford. There is a huge range of offerings across various sizes, features and price points and we are confident you can find a system that meets all your families requirements.
